This past Sunday, I photographed my fourth Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival in as many summers. The 2017 celebration of all things (killer) tomato was the ninth annual day of nightshade-related festivities and took place at Park Tavern in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park for the second year in a row. The food and drink, if you’ve never attended an Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival, are tomato-centric concoctions prepared by some of Atlanta’s finest chefs and mixologists. Every year the event seems a little bigger, and this year was no exception, with big name chefs in from NOLA and LA!
One of the things I enjoy most about photographing “AKTF” each year is the pre-noon prep time, before the festival doors open to the public. While the chefs and mixologists are unloading, and subsequently cutting, chunking, and straining tomatoes, I get a chance to catch up with with a good portion of the Atlanta restaurant community.
It’s always nice to see familiar faces: chefs and restauranteurs whose food, establishments, and portraits I may have photographed for formal reviews, magazine articles, or websites. Of course, it’s also fun to see what new food and drink inventions folks have come up with using just tomatoes, culinary training and a bit of imagination.
If you didn’t catch the last year’s images, the 2016 photos are always available here on my website. Enjoy!
